Serengeti National Park
Honeymoon - Day 6 & 7
Couples don't always agree with each other and each individual has their own preferences. While I like Masai Mara in Kenya better, Mr. Husband found Serengeti in Tanzania more interesting.
After having breakfast at Serengeti Kati Kati Camp, we left for our game drive! The guide explained that "Serengeti" means endless plains in Maasai. In some parts of Serengeti we could see that the grassland extends to somewhere out of the range of our eyesight.
The large number of lions was one of the reasons why Mr. Husband was so fascinated by Serengeti. We came across many lions, saw them eating, resting, walking pass our vehicle and even hunting!
The most memorable one for me was the supposedly hunting. So we spotted 8 female lions marching in the same direction. Following them for a few minutes, we found that they were moving towards a big group of gazelles. I was super excited with what we were about to witness, but at the same pitied the gazelles.
At one point the lions decided to close in on them...I started to worry about the gazelles, although I know many animals are either hunted or starved to death every day. The lions sped up and started to chase the gazelles. The gazelles were scared (I believe) and ran for their lives. They saw a stream and rushed down past the stream to the other side. The eight lions ceased the pursuit as they were scared of water (so the guide said).
Mr. Husband took a video that captured part of the attempted hunt!!
After that,We waited for another 15-20minutes but nothing much happened. At the end the lions also gave up...
I was beyond shocked and just simply couldn't get over it! How could the king of jungle, and eight of them hunting together, didn't even catch one gazelle, which is much smaller and weaker than them??? The two men in the 4x4 were indifferent to my disappointment as if it's the most natural thing in the world....Mr. Husband said it's not even a jungle (but that's not the point right?) and many lions died of starvation?!?! The guide second his opinion and said roughly 40% of lions in Serengeti don't get to survive because they don't get enough food. All these are just unbelievable! Lol
Btw, since there were eight of them, they could've formed a circle instead of going after the prey in a fan shaped right? They don't seem to be very smart...I'm just so disappointed. The children books and stories don't accurately describe the reality...
My personal favourites are zebras and giraffes. Mr. Husband likes lions and elephants. During the safari, I asked why we didn't see any tiger?? Mr. Husband almost fell off from the seat 😆 and explained that tigers don't live in Africa. Really? That's unbelievable, too!
Apart from those lion encounters, I was also amazed seeing zebras hugging each other (alright, at first I suspected that they were mating 😂). Awwwww...that's so cute!
Like in Masai Mara, we saw 4 out of the Big 5 in Serengeti. What's missing? Rhino, of course. They seem to be extremely difficult to find...Mr. Husband holds his hopes high for Ngorongoro, where there are around 20 rhinos living in that conservation area.
Bye bye, Serengeti! It's been an amazing safari experience. I'm glad we decided to come here. Next, we're going to Ngorongoro 😊
