Adapted lenses on Sony A7 series

Adapted lenses on Sony A7 series

I’ve been shooting canon since I was 14 years old. And I stayed loyal, until I was hiking up a volcano in Indonesia with my 5d mk II and several lenses in my backpack. The combo was so heavy that I swore myself that I would change my setup as soon as I would come home. Apart from the weight, I was also bothered by the DSLR’s focus micro adjustment issues. I love shallow depth of field but with my DSLR I would never get the focus exactly where I want it. So I bought a Sony NEX-6 and because I liked that I soon upgraded to a Sony A7. I was happy with the new setup, sold my 5d but kept the lenses, as I was hoping that Canon would soon produce a similar camera to the Sony A7. Now in 2019 that has still not happened and I am still using my Sony A7 a lot. So how about those lenses? Of course I started adapting my canon lenses to my Sony cameras with both the Metabones IV and the SIGMA MC-11 adapters. I honestly must say that for moving subjects, the adapters on the A7 with Canon lenses are almost unusable, so I would only recommend that for landscapes. On the newer Sony’s this is however, a completely different story.

Last year, I was renting a Sony A7Riii and tried it out with my Canon glass. I was really curious, especially how the eye auto-focus would work on my 85mm f1.2 and 50mm f1.2 lenses.  The result to me was shocking. The Sony with the MC-11 performed better than the native lens on my Canon 6d mk ii. Next day, I took the A7Riii to the bird park and paired it with the Canon 70-200mm F2.8 as well as the 2x teleconverter mk iii. I read and saw a lot of bad reviews with this combo and didn’t have a lot of hopes for it to work properly. However, to my surprise, I found the combo was much more workable than my canon setup (6dmk ii + native lens and extender).

MC-11 vs Metabones:
While I prefer the built quality of the metabones, I got better performance out of the MC-11. This might be related to firmware or user error.

SO what?

I was simply blown away by how well the adapted lenses worked but I know my testing was very unscientific. Frankly, I don’t have a lot of time to review camera gear. So if you are interested in a specific lens/adapter combination, leave a comment and I will try to test it, this time making sure I have the latest firmware installed in all the gear.

I have the following lenses that I can test for you:

-Sigma Art 35mm F1.4
-Canon 50mm F1.2 L
-Canon 85mm F1.2 L
-Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L
-Canon 2x extender mk iii
-Canon 17-40mm F4.0
-Sigma 50mm F1.4 HSM (the one before the ART series)
-Canon 50mm F1.8 mk 1

Camera bodies:

I have the original sony A7 but could also rent a A7iii for more testing.

N.B.

As my wife owns a Fujifilm X-t3 and I am also curious about how my canon lenses work on it, let me know if you want me to test any of those. If you have recommendations about what would be the best adapter please also leave a comment.
