First Prenatal Check Up

First Prenatal Check Up

The 10 day waiting period was almost too much to handle. I so wanted to just show up at the clinic and asked for a scan immediately instead of waiting passively for the appointment date to come! Counting down the days didn't help...

Now that I look back, I suppose I was too dramatic as a new expectant mom πŸ˜† Though I had good reason for the anxiety and impatience - I'd been feeling pain on the right abdominal area...Which...made me worried that it's ectopic pregnancy......😣

Finally it's the appointment date - 12 November 2016. Not having any sleep the previous night, I dragged my exhausted and tensed body to the hospital. I was so glad that Nils was there with me (and for me).

Before we could meet the doctor, I had to first do registration and a urine test. Ugh. πŸ˜’ Urine test. Basically just need to pee on the test strip. It's easier said than done...

Back to the clinic with the strip and a soaked tissue paper beneath it, I felt embarrassed and thought of ways to "dry" it next time...😳

I thought we were ready for the doctor. But then, I had to wait to measure my blood pressure, heart rate and weight. Blood pressure was fairly low but not surprising as it's always been like that.

As for my weight...Hmmm...48.2 kg?!?! 😨 I surely did gain weight during the honeymoon in Africa (July to mid-Aug), and also during my brother-in-law's visit in Oct as we were on a quest for fast food in Singapore...I felt guilty for feeding my baby with junk food in the first two weeks of its life 😞...though I couldn't have known...

I jumped as I was called to the doctor's room. "πŸ™πŸΌPlease, baby, πŸ™πŸΌplease be in where you should be in..."...Trembling, I talked to my "baby" internally...

We met the doctor, who was calm and gentle. As expected, she asked when was the first day of my last menstrual period. It's to have a rough idea on the gestational age of the baby. Based on that, I was around 6 weeks pregnant (but of course the baby couldn't have been older than 4 weeks...considering the first week was the period and the week after that couldn't be conceived).

After that, yes, our first ultrasound scan!!! The sensation of the cold gel put on my belly was quite odd...But then...Look! πŸ‘€ There was something on the screen. The doctor pointed at the center of the screen and said it's the "embryo". If I'm honest I didn't know what I was looking at πŸ€”...Just a small, white, irregular bean shaped thingy in a dark area (the screen was black & white). Apparently that's my womb and the early form of our baby!! I was so relieved that it's not an ectopic pregnancy...! The embryo was right inside my uterus and not anywhere else!!!

After that the doctor pressed some buttons and we heard some "boom boom" sound...! The doctor said that's the heart beat!!! πŸ’“ I was so so so moved...!!! Nils and I looked at each other and we found our eyes filled with tears....The life inside me has its own heartbeat! It's a moment that I wouldn't forget...

We left the clinic with a bottle of maternity multivitamins, a print out of the ultrasound scan, and two (hopefully three) happy hearts. 😊

I couldn't stop looking at the photo...It's just 8.4mm and you couldn't make out what was what...but still...our baby!! The estimated due date was 3 July 2017!

P.S. Before the first prenatal check up, we actually:

- Went to a clinic to have a pregnancy test, which was the first time we encountered the pregnancy alien language

- Went for our first maternity tour at the Raffles Hospital

- Searched for a O&G specialist
